Small-business security does not need to start with an expensive enterprise platform. It starts with the controls that prevent the most common incidents: multi-factor authentication, supported and patched systems, dependable backups, sensible administrator access and properly configured cloud accounts. We review what is already in place, fix the obvious gaps and build improvements around the level of risk your business actually has.

Start with the controls that stop common incidents
For most small businesses, improving cyber security does not mean buying a complicated enterprise platform. The biggest gains usually come from consistently applying basic controls: multi-factor authentication, supported software, timely updates, reliable backups, sensible administrator access and properly configured cloud accounts.
The Australian Cyber Security Centre’s Essential Eight is a useful framework for thinking about those controls. Not every small business needs the same implementation, but the framework helps identify where obvious gaps exist and what should be prioritised first.
Microsoft 365 and account security
Business email accounts are valuable because they can be used to reset passwords, impersonate staff and access cloud files. We review MFA, administrator accounts, suspicious forwarding rules, legacy access where relevant and the general way staff accounts are created and removed.
Endpoint protection and patching
Security software is only one layer. Windows, browsers, common business applications and network devices also need to remain supported and updated. Old systems that can no longer receive security updates should be identified and planned out rather than left in service indefinitely.
Backups are part of security
A security incident becomes much worse when the business has no reliable way to recover. Backups should be monitored and representative restores should be tested so there is evidence that important data can actually be recovered.
Practical recommendations, not scare tactics
The goal is to reduce risk in a way that fits the size of the business. We prioritise the changes that make the biggest difference first and explain why they matter, so security becomes part of normal IT maintenance rather than a separate project nobody understands.
Questions we get asked
Can you make us completely secure?
No provider can honestly promise that. The aim is to reduce the likelihood and impact of common incidents by applying sensible controls, keeping systems maintained and making sure recovery is possible if something still goes wrong.
What should a small business do first?
A strong starting point is multi-factor authentication, keeping software updated and maintaining reliable backups. We then look at administrator access, endpoint protection, email and cloud configuration.
Do you work with the Essential Eight?
Yes. We can use the Essential Eight as a practical framework for identifying gaps and prioritising improvements. The exact controls that make sense depend on the size, systems and risk profile of the business.
