A retail shop may look simple from the customer side, but behind the counter there can be POS terminals, EFTPOS, printers, cloud software, WiFi, CCTV, email and supplier systems all depending on the same network.

Keep POS and EFTPOS reliable

Where possible, fixed POS terminals should use a wired network connection. This reduces the chance that payment or sales systems are affected by WiFi congestion or interference.

Separate business and guest WiFi

Customer WiFi should not share unrestricted access with business devices. A properly configured network can provide separate wireless networks for staff, operational equipment and guests.

Plan internet failover

If the shop cannot trade properly without internet, a backup connection deserves serious consideration. 4G/5G or Starlink may provide a secondary path depending on the location and equipment.

Position cameras for useful evidence

Retail CCTV commonly covers entrances, counters, stock areas and external approaches. Camera placement should balance identification, overview coverage and lighting conditions.

Protect Microsoft 365 and business accounts

Email, rosters, supplier information and documents are often stored in cloud services. Multi-factor authentication, controlled administrator access and regular account reviews should be standard.

Back up important data

Cloud POS systems may retain transaction data, but that does not automatically protect every file, email or document the business depends on. Identify what would be difficult to replace and make sure it has a recovery path.

Keep network equipment out of harm’s way

Routers and switches should not be hidden behind counters where cables are repeatedly disturbed. A small cabinet or secure equipment area can make the network more reliable and easier to service.

Document printers and specialist devices

Receipt printers, barcode scanners, label printers and other equipment often use fixed network settings or specialised drivers. Keep a simple record of models and configuration so replacements and troubleshooting are faster.
