When internet access stops, many businesses also lose cloud software, Microsoft 365, VoIP phones, EFTPOS, remote access and access to online systems. Internet failover gives the network a second path when the primary service fails.
What is internet failover?
Failover uses a secondary internet connection that can take over when the normal connection is unavailable. Depending on the router and configuration, switching can be automatic or manual.
4G or 5G backup
Mobile broadband is often the simplest backup option. It can work well where there is reliable mobile coverage and the business does not require extremely large amounts of data during an outage.
Before relying on it, test signal strength inside the building and confirm that the router can use the service as a secondary WAN connection.
Starlink as a backup connection
Starlink can be useful where fixed-line services are unreliable or mobile reception is poor. It also provides a different physical path from an NBN service, which can be valuable when local fixed infrastructure has a fault.
It requires a suitable dish location with a clear view of the sky and should be installed so the cabling and mounting are appropriate for the premises.
A second NBN service
A second fixed-line service can provide additional capacity, but resilience depends on whether both services share the same local infrastructure. Two services that fail for the same upstream reason may not provide much protection.
Automatic failover needs the right router
Many basic consumer routers cannot manage multiple internet services well. Business routers can monitor the primary connection and move traffic to a secondary service when required.
Test the failover before you need it
A backup service that has never been tested may fail because of an expired SIM, incorrect routing, DNS problems or a configuration change. Periodic testing should confirm that computers, cloud applications, phones and important services still work during failover.
Decide what must keep working
Not every device needs full-speed internet during an outage. Prioritise business-critical systems such as cloud applications, email, phones, EFTPOS and remote access. Large updates and non-essential traffic can be limited while on the backup connection.
Shortcut Computers can troubleshoot NBN and internet faults, configure business network equipment and install Starlink where it is an appropriate option.
